Manila Electric Company (Meralco) was named “Company of the Year” at the 21st Philippine Quill Awards after winning 36 recognitions for its wide-ranging communication initiatives in customer service, sustainability, digitalization, public safety, and corporate social responsibility.
The power distributor secured 10 Awards of Excellence and 26 Awards of Merit, reaffirming its reputation not only as the country’s largest electric utility but also as a leader in business communication.
“This honor affirms the vital role of strategic communication in advancing Meralco’s mission to keep the lights on,” said Joe R. Zaldarriaga, Meralco vice president and head of corporate communications. “Being named Company of the Year inspires us to continue raising the bar in using clear, timely, and relevant communication as a driver of positive change that empowers the communities we serve, and builds trust with our stakeholders.”
This marks the fifth time Meralco has earned the top award, making it the only company in the country to achieve the distinction multiple times.
Among the recognized programs were communication campaigns explaining monthly electricity rate adjustments, sustainability projects promoting renewable energy and urban farming, and the expansion of digital platforms such as the Meralco Newsroom and the “Manong Joe” customer education channel.
Other initiatives included safety campaigns against electrical hazards, livelihood support programs for communities, and electrification projects to extend power access to underserved households.
The Philippine Quill Awards, organized by the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Philippines, is considered the country’s most prestigious recognition for excellence in business communication.
Industry observers note that Meralco’s consistent performance at the Quill Awards reflects a growing emphasis among utilities on transparency, stakeholder engagement, and sustainability-driven messaging, especially as energy companies navigate rising demand and a global transition to cleaner power sources.
