BACOLOD CITY – A 42-year-old man and his 9-year-old nephew drowned in the Nabinay River in Barangay Mabini, Cadiz City, Negros Occidental on Tuesday.
Police Lt. Daleen Grace Loreno, deputy chief of Cadiz City Police Station, said the man, identified only as “Jesus,” would usually bring his two nephews with him to gather seashells in the river.
The boy suddenly drowned due to a strong water current, prompting his uncle to attempt a rescue, but he was also swept away and both subsequently submerged.
The incident was witnessed by their minor companion, who called for help from nearby relatives.
Loreno said search and retrieval operations lasted two to three hours.
Both victims were later declared dead at a hospital.
