BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — A 47-year-old man died after allegedly eating a snake turtle in Barangay 6, Moises Padilla, Negros Occidental, on Wednesday.
The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office said it responded to a call for assistance after the man complained of chest pain and difficulty breathing.
Of the companions who ate the snake turtle, only the man reported feeling unwell, rescuers said.
Rescuers provided oxygen and transported him to the town infirmary, where he was declared dead.
The MDRRMO said it has not been confirmed whether the death was caused by consuming the snake turtle.
Authorities said they are awaiting official medical findings to determine the cause of death.
Local rescuers said the family has not said whether the man had an existing illness.
Some species of turtles and other wild-caught animals can carry bacteria and other contaminants, and health officials generally advise the public to seek medical care immediately if severe symptoms occur after eating unfamiliar wildlife.
