Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James has been cleared to resume contact basketball activities and will be re-evaluated in one to two weeks, the team announced Thursday (Friday, Philippine time).
James has been sidelined with sciatica affecting the right side of his lower back and leg, a condition that causes nerve pain from the spine down through the leg.
Despite his absence, the Lakers have surged to a 7-2 start, winning five straight games to open the 2025–2026 NBA season.
The 40-year-old James is entering his 23rd NBA season and his eighth year with the Los Angeles franchise.
He remains the league’s all-time leading scorer and one of its most decorated athletes, with 21 All-Star appearances and four NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards.
Last season, he averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds per game, finishing sixth in MVP voting and earning All-NBA second team honors.
James’ eventual return is expected to bolster an already confident Lakers squad eyeing another deep playoff run.
The team will continue monitoring his condition, with medical staff planning another evaluation in the coming weeks to determine his availability.
James has not yet played this season, but his progress signals a likely return before the end of November.
His presence would add veteran leadership and offensive versatility to a Lakers team thriving under head coach Darvin Ham’s system.
With the Lakers currently among the Western Conference’s top contenders, James’ recovery timeline could be crucial in shaping the team’s early momentum.
More updates on his status will be provided following his next medical evaluation.
