Lapu-Lapu crowd powers IRONMAN 70.3 race

LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — Thousands of schoolchildren and local residents are expected to bring another surge of energy to IRONMAN 70.3 Lapu-Lapu when the endurance race returns Aug. 9.

The event will gather leading professional triathletes, seasoned age-group competitors, and emerging local racers at Mactan Newtown.

Athletes will complete a 1.9-kilometer ocean swim, a 90-kilometer bike leg, and a 21-kilometer run.

The official race schedule lists the men’s professional start at 6:20 a.m., followed by the women’s professional field at 6:25 a.m. and the age-group and relay rolling start at 6:30 a.m.

Organizers said the support of young spectators and other residents has helped make the race one of the most memorable events on the international triathlon calendar.

Schoolchildren traditionally line the course waving flags, displaying handmade placards, and cheering for competitors from the opening swim to the final finishers.

The race’s official website highlights its spectator support as a major attraction and notes that the event was named the Best Spectator Race in 2018.

The crowd’s sustained encouragement has become as closely associated with the event as its swim, bike, and run segments.

Organizers said the atmosphere often pushes athletes beyond their limits while reflecting the warmth and hospitality that have made Lapu-Lapu City a favorite destination among triathletes.

Australia’s Josh Ferris and New Zealand’s Amelia Watkinson won the men’s and women’s professional titles, respectively, in 2025.

Ferris captured the men’s crown in 3:49:10, beating New Zealand’s Mike Phillips, who finished in 3:52:40.

Watkinson dominated the women’s professional division in 4:14:22 to reclaim the title eight years after her first victory in 2017.

Both champions said the community’s overwhelming support was among their strongest memories of the race.

“I was screaming along without knowing,” said Ferris. “My ears were about to burst, they were so loud. All the school kids out there, all the people were cheering, and it was awesome.”

Watkinson shared the same sentiment.

“It’s different – it’s not just racing, it’s racing with emotion,” she said.

The professional start list has yet to be released, leaving the participation of Ferris and Watkinson uncertain.

Regardless of who competes, athletes can expect the same wall of sound and color that has become synonymous with IRONMAN 70.3 Lapu-Lapu.

Young spectators are expected to line the streets from the time the first swimmers enter the water until the final participants cross the finish line.

Their encouragement will support professionals chasing podium finishes, age-group competitors targeting faster times, and first-time participants pursuing personal milestones.

The community’s involvement has helped transform the Sunrise Events Inc.-organized competition into more than a premier sporting event.

The race has also become a celebration of sportsmanship, volunteerism, and local pride.

Residents welcome athletes from around the world while introducing younger generations to the values of perseverance, discipline, and excellence.

Race-week activities will begin before the main competition.

The all-female Reyna Bulakna Run will open the festivities Aug. 7, with the event scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at the Liberty Shrine in Mactan.

The RLC Residences IRONKIDS will take center stage Aug. 8 at Dusit Thani Mactan.

IRONKIDS will feature a swim-run competition for the country’s future triathlon stars and a Kids Run for children ages 6 to 15.

The swim-run’s age-based run distances range from 1 to 2 kilometers.

The official IRONKIDS program lists 100-meter to 250-meter swim legs and 1-kilometer to 2-kilometer run legs for individual aquathlon participants, depending on their age group.

The Sunrise Sprint will be held alongside IRONMAN 70.3 Lapu-Lapu on Aug. 9.

Designed as a beginner-friendly introduction to multisport racing, the sprint consists of a 750-meter swim, a 25-kilometer bike leg, and a 5-kilometer run.
