JJ Redick will remain at the helm of the Los Angeles Lakers after agreeing to a head coaching contract extension announced on Sept. 26, 2025.
Terms of the deal—including salary, final-year options, and eligibility clauses—were not disclosed.
“We think he’s a special coach with a special voice that’s really helping us continue to define the culture of Lakers’ excellence,” said Lakers President of Basketball Operations Rob Pelinka.
Redick did a resounding job in his first year as head coach for the purple and gold, leading the Lakers to the third seed in the Western Conference with a win-loss record of 50 wins and 32 losses.
Amid several starting five changes and system play tweaks, Redick shut down critics who believed he would be just another tactician fired by the Lakers, as happened to Frank Vogel and Darvin Ham.
However, Redick provided a different approach to the Lakers, which mainly revolved around better ball movement and off-ball plays for the guards.
Redick then faced his toughest task when the Mavericks engaged in a blockbuster trade that sent Anthony Davis to Dallas in exchange for the generational talent of Slovenian wizard Luka Doncic.
Despite limited games remaining in the regular season and the Lakers poised to enter the playoffs, Redick found a way to help LeBron James complement Doncic’s style of play as the team’s primary ball handler.
However, those advantages didn’t translate into success when the playoffs began, as the Lakers squandered home-court advantage and lost to Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Redick and Los Angeles will have a chance to redeem themselves when the upcoming NBA season kicks off next month, backed by new faces such as center Deandre Ayton, stretch forward Jake LaRavia, and veteran two-way point guard Marcus Smart.
“We just wanted to make a clear statement that this is what we believe in, what we’re going to lean into, and what our players are going to mold into as we continue to develop the identity,” added Pelinka.
