The Iloilo City Police Station has confirmed that the contents of a parcel turned over to authorities on April 15 were illegal drugs.
Captain Joebert Amado, chief of Iloilo City Police Station 5 (ICPS5), said the Regional Forensic Unit 6 (RFU6) confirmed the parcel contained dried marijuana leaves.
The marijuana was found in two large sachets hidden inside a wrapped mobile phone box.
A delivery rider surrendered the package to the police after becoming suspicious of its contents.
Amado said the rider picked up the parcel from Barangay San Isidro, Jaro.
He was told the item was a mobile phone intended for delivery to a town in central Iloilo.
The rider was paid to bring the package to the transport terminal in Barangay Ungka, Jaro.
However, after shaking the box, the rider doubted it contained a cellphone.
He contacted a friend who is a non-uniformed personnel of the Philippine National Police (PNP) to ask for advice.
They decided to turn the package over to ICPS5 on the evening of April 15.
The box was opened in the presence of police investigators, who discovered two sachets containing dried marijuana leaves.
Amado said the items were immediately submitted to RFU6 for testing.
The lab results later confirmed the parcel contained 22.8 grams of marijuana.
Amado said they already have a photo of the sender.
They also requested the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) to assist in identifying the intended recipient.
