KO stage heats up as Chameleons, Highrisers collide; Chargers face Titans

With their semifinal hopes hanging by a thread, Nxled and Akari brace for highly unpredictable, do-or-die clashes against surging rivals Galeries Tower and Choco Mucho as the Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference shifts into its most unforgiving phase at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium on Saturday.

In a stage where one bad set can end a campaign, past records and paper advantages are rendered nearly meaningless. What matters most now is composure under pressure, timely adjustments and the sheer will to survive.

Nxled, which narrowly missed outright entry into the Qualifying Round, squares off with a dangerous Galeries Tower side at 4 p.m. – a team riding high after a stunning straight-set upset of Capital1.

The Highrisers’ confidence is peaking at the right time, making them a particularly tricky opponent despite the Chameleons’ star-studded roster.

While Nxled flashes firepower through Brooke Van Sickle, Myla Pablo and MJ Phillips, its campaign has been a tale of streaks – from a blazing 3-0 start to a four-game skid, before regaining rhythm late in the prelims.

That inconsistency only adds to the uncertainty – will the Chameleons sustain their resurgence, or falter under pressure once more?

Meanwhile, Galeries Tower has already shown it can dismantle favored teams. If Jean Asis, Roselle Baliton, Aiza Pontillas and Gayle Pascual replicate their explosive showing, another upset could very well be in the offing.

“All throughout itong season, ‘di ganon kapangit yung ginalaw namin. Kulang lang talaga kami ng siguro yung camaraderie pa, magkakakila-kilala yung mga players namin. Siguro, mas maganda yung gagalawin namin kapag ganon yung mangyari sa team namin,” said Galeries Tower head coach Clarence Esteban.

The stakes are just as high in the 6:30 p.m. clash between Akari and Choco Mucho, where familiarity breeds neither comfort nor certainty.

Choco Mucho dominated their previous meeting early in the conference, but knockout games have a way of flipping narratives.

Armed with Sisi Rondina, Eya Laure and Kat Tolentino, the Flying Titans possess proven scoring might.

“Siyempre inisip din namin na kagagawan din naman namin kung bakit kami nandito. So, ayun ginawa lang namin is mag-trabaho, and gustong-gusto pa rin namin… And ipipilit pa rin namin na makapasok pa rin kami sa gusto namin mangyari sa team namin,” said Rondina.

Yet Akari is far from overmatched. With Ivy Lacsina, Eli Soyud and Grethcel Soltones leading the charge – and reinforced by the formidable middle duo of Fifi Sharma and Ced Domingo – the Chargers have both the tools and the temperament to turn the tide.

In matches where momentum can swing wildly and pressure can either break or elevate teams, both contests loom as toss-ups.

Winners move forward for another pair of do-or-die matches. Losers go home.

Sister teams PLDT and Cignal claimed the first two semis berths after turning back Farm Fresh and Creamline, respectively, on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Foxies and the Cool Smashers will face the winners of Saturday’s matchups to determine the last two semifinalists on April 7.

The league will observe a Holy Week break from March 29 to April 5.

With every rally carrying the weight of an entire season, expect nothing less than fierce, unpredictable battles fueled by desperation and the unrelenting pursuit of a Final Four berth.
