BACOLOD CITY — Eight villages in two localities in Negros Occidental were affected by ashfall following the moderately explosive eruption of Kanlaon Volcano in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental, on Saturday.
The Office of Civil Defense-Negros Island Region reported ashfall in Barangays Igmayaan, Bunga, Bacong, Proper, Kumaliskis, Bago and Pandaon in Don Salvador Benedicto.
Ashfall was also reported in Barangay Ara-al in La Carlota City.
OCD-NIR Director Donato Sermeno III led the delivery of 5,040 face masks packed in 21 boxes to the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office of Don Salvador Benedicto.
The masks were provided to help residents in ashfall-affected communities protect themselves from airborne volcanic ash and other potential respiratory irritants associated with volcanic activity.
In San Carlos City, a sulfur odor was reported in the upper portions of Barangay Codcod, although no ashfall was recorded.
Rumbling sounds and a sulfur odor were also reported in La Carlota City.
Bago City experienced a visible volcanic cloud, booming sounds and ground shaking, but no ashfall or sulfur odor was reported.
OCD-NIR said it continues to monitor Kanlaon Volcano’s activity and coordinate with concerned local government units and partner agencies to assess conditions and facilitate assistance when needed.
The agency urged the public to follow advisories from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, observe precautions against ashfall and rely only on verified information from official sources.
The eruption occurred at about 12:46 p.m. and generated a grayish plume that rose about 600 meters above the summit crater, according to OCD-NIR.
The plume initially drifted north-northeast before moving generally westward, while the eruption lasted about two minutes.
Kanlaon recorded a similar eruption on July 9, when ashfall reached as far as Cebu province.
Alert Level 2 remains in effect over Kanlaon Volcano, indicating continuing volcanic unrest.
