It was a short but sweet ride for the DC Ferrari.
After 11 NBA seasons and five All-Star selections, John Wall officially announced his retirement on Aug. 20, 2025.
“Today, I’m stepping off of the court, but not away from the game,” Wall posted on his official X account.
Considered one of the top high school recruits to join the Kentucky Wildcats, Wall quickly caught the attention of NBA scouts after a standout NCAA season in 2009–10.
His impressive college performance boosted his draft stock, and he was selected first overall by the Washington Wizards in the 2010 NBA Draft.
Wall’s arrival gave Washington renewed hope of ending its playoff drought, and the dynamic point guard delivered by leading the Wizards to a postseason appearance in 2013.
Although he never reached the Eastern Conference finals, Wall guided the Wizards to four playoff runs, including two semifinal appearances.
He spent more than half of his career with Washington before being traded to the Houston Rockets in 2020.
From there, Wall’s career declined due to a series of injuries, including a torn Achilles, a season-ending bone spur, and recurring knee inflammation.
In addition to his five All-Star selections, Wall was named to the All-NBA third team, the NBA All-Rookie first team, and the NBA All-Defensive second team in 2015, and he also won an All-Star Slam Dunk contest.
“Basketball will always be in my life, and new opportunities present themselves,” Wall added.
“I feel now is the time to walk confidently into my next chapter.”
