JBLCF student tops Negros Occidental statistics quiz

BACOLOD CITY — Heavenrick B. Torillo of John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation-Bacolod (JBLCF) emerged as Negros Occidental champion of the 30th Philippine Statistics Quiz Provincial Eliminations, which drew 48 college freshmen from 16 colleges and universities.
Torillo, a Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation student, topped three tightly contested rounds consisting of 10 questions each to claim the provincial championship.
The Philippine Statistics Quiz is an annual competition designed to enhance students’ awareness and appreciation of statistics and promote understanding of its role in development planning and government statistical activities.
Brian G. Libores, a BS Accountancy student from Binalbagan Catholic College, placed second.
Shanea Mae O. Ang, a BS Tourism Management student from La Consolacion College-Bacolod, finished third.
Phoebe Pearl P. Juayong of Carlos Hilado Memorial State University placed fourth, while Karlaisle V. Dumdum of the Technological University of the Philippines-Visayas finished fifth.
The top finishers and their respective coaches received plaques or trophies of recognition, medals and cash prizes.
The 16 participating institutions were Bacolod City College, Bago City College, Binalbagan Catholic College, Carlos Hilado Memorial State University, Central Philippine State University, Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod, Colegio de La Castellana and John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation-Bacolod.
Also competing were Kabankalan Catholic College, La Carlota City College, La Consolacion College-Bacolod, Philippine Normal University-Visayas, Southland College, STI-West Negros University, Technological University of the Philippines-Visayas and the University of St. La Salle.
The top five finalists will represent Negros Occidental in the 30th Philippine Statistics Quiz Regional Eliminations on Oct. 14, 2026.
Those who place in the regional competition will advance to the National Finals and represent the Negros Island Region.
The board of judges was composed of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas-Bacolod Branch Bank Officer II Olive Jade B. Gavan and Teofilo Gensoli National High School Principal I Dr. Anna J. Bacolod.
The panel was chaired by Rochelle T. Sacudit, economic development specialist I of the Department of Economy, Planning and Development-Negros Island Region.
Grace Ann G. Badiana of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas-Bacolod served as quiz master and facilitated the competition.
STI West Negros University Director of Student Affairs and Services Dr. Jake Lauren S. Mercado delivered a welcome and inspirational message to the contestants.
Ma. Goretti M. Novilla, chief statistical specialist of the Philippine Statistics Authority Regional Statistical Services Office-Negros Island Region Statistical Operations and Coordination, thanked participating schools for their continued support of the annual competition.
This year’s provincial eliminations marked the first time the competition used a digital contest platform and recorded its highest number of participants to date.
The PSA said the annual quiz gives young Filipinos a platform to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in statistics while reinforcing the importance of statistical information in evidence-based decision-making and development planning.
