The Italian duo of Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori overcame a stiff challenge from superstars Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud, 6-3, 5-7, 10-6, to successfully defend their US Open mixed doubles title on Aug. 21, 2025, at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.
Errani and Vavassori proved that doubles is a different battleground as they delivered a precise, tactical performance to take down the highly touted pairing.
Throughout the two-day tournament, the Italians lost only one set, sweeping their first three matches before finding their toughest test in the final.
They opened strong, breaking Swiatek and Ruud in the fourth game and holding serve twice to take the first set and grab a 1-0 lead.
But the opposition responded with composure, rallying from a 4-5 deficit in the second set to stay alive.
Swiatek and Ruud broke Vavassori’s serve—a first in three matches—and leveled the set at 5-all.
Vavassori, who had relied on his powerful serve throughout the tournament, was visibly rattled as Ruud’s deep forehands dictated the pace.
The Norwegian’s timely groundstrokes helped them steal the second set and force a deciding 10-point tiebreaker.
However, the Italians stormed out to a 4-0 lead in the decider and never looked back.
Swiatek managed to chip away with baseline winners, but Vavassori sealed the win with a passing shot that split the middle.
“I think it was amazing to play on this court with so many people, and I have to say thanks from the bottom of my heart for the atmosphere,” said Vavassori after the match.
With back-to-back US Open mixed doubles titles, Errani and Vavassori will take home the grand prize of USD1 million (PHP57.05 million).
