Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology on May 22 took a major step toward boosting its research capabilities with the launch of a PHP5 million laboratory upgrade project.
The university held an inception meeting for the enhancement of its Biodiversity and Molecular Laboratory, a key initiative under its plan to establish a comprehensive fisheries complex.
Funded by the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development, the project aims to turn the laboratory into a hub for innovation, research and community development.
The meeting was held at the ISUFST Main Campus-Tiwi Site conference room in Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo.
DOST-PCAARRD Institutional Development Division Director Dr. Fezoil Luz Decena led the delegation, joined by Engr. Ruel Carlo Tanqueco, Victor Alcantara and Sherwin De Los Reyes.
They discussed procurement protocols, equipment tagging and coordination strategies with university officials involved in the project.
ISUFST vice presidents, directors, deans, faculty and staff attended the meeting to align on project roles and responsibilities.
Dr. Decena stressed the need for collaboration and strategic planning, saying, “To make this project a success, we must be strategic and resourceful. A thorough market survey will help us identify what’s truly needed, and with everyone working together, we can ensure that we deliver quality services that benefit your community and advance scientific progress.”
Project leader Dr. Mary Mar Payne said the upgrade goes beyond acquiring new tools, emphasizing its potential to empower students and faculty in biodiversity and fisheries research.
“This isn’t just about new tools,” she said. “It’s about empowering our students and faculty to explore new ideas and make a real impact in biodiversity and fisheries research.”
ISUFST President Nordy Siason Jr. called the initiative a pivotal step in the university’s transformation into a leading fisheries hub.
“This project is a big step toward turning our school into a leading fisheries hub, anchored on our guiding principles,” he said. “It’s about creating a space where our students and researchers can grow, collaborate and build a sustainable future for our fisheries and region.”
He also emphasized its potential to position ISUFST as an international leader in fisheries science.
Engr. Tanqueco lauded the active participation of ISUFST stakeholders, noting their enthusiasm for collaboration with DOST.
“We’re here to support you around the clock,” he said. “Together, we can build a strong partnership that will go a long way in advancing our shared goals.”
The initiative highlights ISUFST’s commitment to advancing science, education and community development through collaborative innovation.
