IRONMAN 70.3 Laoag debuts in 2027

Laoag City will join the Philippine IRONMAN circuit in 2027 as it hosts the inaugural IRONMAN 70.3 Laoag, bringing one of endurance racing’s best-known brands to Ilocos Norte for the first time.

The new race gives the country’s growing triathlon community another major competition venue while positioning Laoag as a sports tourism destination that can attract athletes, families, and supporters from the Philippines and overseas.

It will be the first time the Ilocos Norte capital hosts a triathlon of this scale, with organizers promising a fast and accessible course combined with the city’s history, culture, cuisine, and northern hospitality.

The race will feature the standard IRONMAN 70.3 distances of a 1.9-kilometer swim, a 90-kilometer bike leg, and a 21.1-kilometer run.

The course will begin with an ocean swim at Sadiri Beach before taking competitors through northern roads and historic streets toward the heart of Laoag.

Registration is now open for the 2027 race.

Laoag, known as the Sunshine City, is being promoted not only as a race venue but also as a destination where competitors and spectators can explore Ilocos Norte before and after the event.

Its relatively compact urban setting is expected to give athletes and their families easier access to accommodations, dining, local attractions, and other parts of the province during race weekend.

As a gateway to northern Luzon, Laoag combines historic streets and long-standing Ilocano traditions with local markets, an expanding café scene, and other elements of contemporary city life.

Organizers expect that combination of competition and destination appeal to give IRONMAN 70.3 Laoag a distinct identity within the Philippine race calendar.

The event is also expected to expose visiting athletes to the wider tourism offerings of Ilocos Norte, extending the economic impact of race weekend beyond the course to hotels, restaurants, transport services, local shops, and other businesses.

Laoag City Mayor James Bryan Alcid said the event would give the city an opportunity to present its character and hospitality to a broader international audience.

“We are proud to welcome IRONMAN 70.3 and the athletes, families and supporters who will come to experience Laoag City. This event gives us an opportunity to share what makes our city special – our history, our culture, our food, our people and the genuine warmth with which we welcome our visitors.”

Alcid said the city also hopes competitors leave Laoag with memories that go beyond their performance during the race.

For organizer Sunrise Events Inc., the addition of Laoag expands the Philippine IRONMAN experience into another destination with a character distinct from the country’s established host cities.

“We are especially excited for athletes to discover Laoag for the first time through IRONMAN 70.3. From the ocean swim and fast northern roads to the city finish and everything athletes can experience away from the course, this race is about creating new stories in a new destination,” said SEI president and managing director Princess Galura.

The Laoag race will further expand a Philippine IRONMAN scene that has developed over more than a decade across destinations including Cebu and Subic.

IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 events have been held in the Philippines since 2009, according to organizers, helping build a domestic community of professional and age-group triathletes while drawing international participants to the country.

The IRONMAN 70.3 format itself combines swimming, cycling, and running over a total distance of 70.3 miles, or about 113 kilometers, and has grown into a global middle-distance triathlon series.

Michelle Pepper, managing director of Asia-Pacific for the IRONMAN Group, said the organization welcomed the opportunity to introduce another Philippine race destination.

“We’re proud to have had IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon races in the Philippines since 2009. It has been great to see the local triathlon community grow over the years, and for so many athletes from around the world to have experienced racing in the country during that time.”

With an oceanfront start, fast northern roads, a historic urban setting, and access to Ilocos Norte’s cultural and culinary attractions, IRONMAN 70.3 Laoag is being positioned as both a new endurance challenge and a showcase of northern Luzon.

The 2027 debut will open Laoag’s own chapter in Philippine IRONMAN racing while giving athletes a new course to experience from the swim start through the bike and run legs to the city finish.
