The IRONMAN 70.3 Davao returns on March 22 with a redesigned bike course, punishing heat, and qualifying slots for the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Nice, France.
Now on its fifth staging, the race reinforces Davao’s place on the international triathlon calendar, with organizers expecting a strong field of elite professionals and age-group contenders.
Athletes will take on the standard IRONMAN 70.3 distance of a 1.9-kilometer swim, a 90-kilometer bike ride, and a 21.1-kilometer run.
Organized by Sunrise Events Inc., the race also has strong corporate backing, with BYD as title sponsor and Aboitiz as presenting sponsor—a partnership that brings together innovation, sustainable mobility, and long-standing support for nation-building and community development.
The event is also part of the National Sports Tourism Inter-Agency Council’s initiative to position the Philippines as a premier global destination for endurance sports.
Led by the Philippine Sports Commission and supported by the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority, the initiative highlights how world-class races set in natural destinations can strengthen the country’s sporting profile while boosting tourism.
Dutch triathlete Eric van der Linden and Lanao del Norte’s Leyann Ramo won the overall titles in the 2024 edition, which drew more than 1,000 triathletes over the demanding coastal road course.
This year’s race adds intrigue with a modified bike route expected to present fresh tactical challenges and a greater degree of difficulty.
The updated course will test pacing, technical execution, and race strategy as athletes balance speed with endurance under Davao’s demanding conditions.
The heat, long considered one of the race’s defining factors, is again expected to shape the outcome.
With warm temperatures and high humidity typical of race week, competitors will need disciplined hydration, nutrition, and heat management to stay competitive.
Beyond the physical test, the race carries global significance by offering qualifying slots to the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Nice, France.
Those slots further strengthen Davao’s status as a key stop on the international IRONMAN circuit and as a gateway for Filipino and regional athletes seeking a place on the world stage.
The event also has the continued support of the Davao City government, underscoring its commitment to sports tourism, active lifestyles, and world-class endurance competitions.
