IPs affected by mega-dam project receive livelihood inputs

The Department of Labor and Employment Regional (DOLE) Office 6 collaborated with the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) to provide sustainable livelihood to the Panay Bukidnon Halawodnon Indigenous Peoples (IPs) whose livelihood were affected by the Jalaur River Multi-purpose Project in Calinog, Iloilo.

As directed by DOLE-6 Regional Director Atty. Sixto T. Rodriguez, Jr., Assistant Regional Director Atty. Dax Villaruel lead the releasing of Php2,999,858 in livelihood inputs to beneficiaries from Brgys. Agcalaga, Alibunan, Binulosan Pequeño, Garangan, Guinbonyugan, Masaroy and Tuyongan last April 4, 2023.

Eighty-six (86) beneficiaries were provided with basic items for sari-sari store such as oil, sugar, noodles, coffee, milk, condiments and cleaning materials. Earlier, 14 beneficiaries with rice retailing project were also provided with sacks of two varieties of rice.

NIA personnel led by May Grace T. Duremdes and Ruth Cely M. Jamelo, Aldren Dalisay of the National Commission of the Indigenous Peoples, Calinog PESO Manager Jan Daryl Pulmones, who represented Mayor Francisco Calvo, and Police Major Romwill D. Miras graced the occasion and committed to provide necessary support for the success and sustainability of the projects.

The megadam project is expected to provide year-round irrigation, bulk water supply, hydroelectric power, eco-tourism and will serve 22 municipalities, including Passi City and Iloilo City.

The respective punong barangays, tribal chiefs and Indigenous People Organization representatives expressed their gratitude to the projects.

In behalf of the IPs, Guinbunyugan Tribal Leader Peter Condez conveyed their appreciation to the support extended by the government through DOLE and NIA.
