The International Boxing Association (IBA) kicked off its campaign to reshape the sport’s future by appointing Filipino living legend Manny Pacquiao as vice president, as announced on Oct. 28, 2025.
Pacquiao’s designation was made official during the IBA Board of Directors meeting in Manila, a ceremony that took place on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the iconic “Thrilla in Manila” bout between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier.
Despite being active again after coming out of retirement, the IBA sees Pacquiao’s new role as the boxing body’s first step in redefining its global mission.
According to IBA President Umar Kremlev, Pacquiao will help develop new boxing programs—particularly at the grassroots level—and expand opportunities for athletes.
“We have been helping children as an organization, while Manny has been doing it all alone,” said Kremlev.
“Now, we will continue to help our children together as a united IBA boxing family and extend Manny’s programs beyond the borders.”
As part of its planned list of activities, Pacquiao will travel with Kremlev around the world to promote fairness and protection while building bridges between amateur and professional boxers.
Kremlev added that Pacquiao will also be tasked with a number of special assignments entrusted to him by the IBA Board of Directors.
“I believe boxing can unite people in ways that politics never can,” Pacquiao said.
“I am proud to join this mission. I believe boxing can unite people in ways that politics never can. It can change lives, transform communities, and bring peace where there is division.”
Pacquiao is currently seeking his next fight, targeted for January 2026, after settling for a majority draw against Mario Barrios on July 19, 2025.
