Iloilo, Negros booters shine in FIFA U15 World Cup

BAKU, Azerbaijan — Young football talents from Iloilo and Negros Occidental made their mark on the global stage as the Philippine Under-15 Men’s National Football Team finished 110th among 189 countries in the inaugural FIFA U15 World Cup & Festival in Azerbaijan.
Barotac Nuevo’s Nathan Caligdong emerged as one of the Philippines’ leading scorers with three goals, while Negros Occidental’s John Carlo Rendon contributed two goals to the national team’s campaign.
Fellow Negrense Frank Jonas Oliverio also scored once, giving Western Visayas players a combined six goals in the tournament.
Their performances highlighted the continuing contribution of Iloilo and Negros Occidental to Philippine football, particularly in developing young players capable of competing against international opposition.
The Philippines concluded its campaign with four victories in 10 matches, scoring 19 goals and conceding 20.
The Filipinos narrowly missed a higher finish after suffering a 2-1 defeat to European side Andorra in their final classification match.
The result placed the Philippines 110th in the competition, which brought together national youth teams from across the world.
Caligdong, Rendon lead Visayas scorers
Caligdong, a product of Barotac Nuevo’s football community, shared second place among the Philippine team’s leading scorers with Cavite’s Dan Becera and Los Angeles-based Quito Pascual, who also recorded three goals each.
The Ilonggo youngster is the nephew of former Philippine national team standout Emelio “Chieffy” Caligdong, whose career helped establish Barotac Nuevo’s reputation as one of the country’s football strongholds.
Nathan demonstrated his scoring ability during the Philippines’ commanding 8-1 victory over Curaçao, where he completed a brace with a penalty kick and a late tap-in.
Rendon, who hails from Pontevedra, Negros Occidental, also delivered an impressive performance against Curaçao.
He opened the scoring in the seventh minute following a pass from fellow Negrense John Zhian Enario.
Rendon later completed his brace before halftime and contributed an assist to Pascual’s goal during the same match.
Oliverio, another player with roots in Negros Occidental, contributed one goal to the Philippines’ tournament tally.
The three players’ contributions underscored the importance of grassroots football development in Western Visayas, where communities have consistently produced players for national youth teams.
The region’s representation also included Enario, who helped create scoring opportunities during the competition.
The national team’s leading scorer was Quezon City-born, Barcelona-based winger Sylar Alcantara, who finished with four goals.
Defenders Micah Alva of Philadelphia and Matthew Zamora of Muntinlupa added one goal each, while an opposition own goal completed the Philippines’ 19-goal tally.
Andorra snatches late victory
The Philippines nearly ended its campaign with another victory but fell to Andorra in a closely contested classification match.
The European side struck just 23 seconds into the opening half through Max Rossell, who scored directly from a left-side corner kick.
The goal, known in football as an Olimpico, gave Andorra an immediate advantage.
The Filipinos responded approximately a minute later when Alcantara fired a long-range shot from midfield to level the match at 1-1.
The quick exchange set the tone for a contest in which the Philippines repeatedly threatened the Andorran defense.
In the 17th minute, Adrien Peña unleashed an effort from the top of the penalty area, while Becera attempted to head home the rebound.
Both on-target attempts were denied by Andorran goalkeeper Joan Caballol.
The Philippines created another dangerous sequence in the 31st minute, with Alcantara testing Caballol from outside the penalty area.
Zhian Enario followed with a left-footed attempt in front of goal, but Caballol completed a double save to preserve the deadlock.
The match remained tied until the 37th minute, when Andorran defender Jordi Puig scored from the far right to secure the 2-1 victory.
Despite the defeat, the Philippines demonstrated its attacking potential against European opposition and finished the tournament with four wins.
Four victories highlight PHL campaign
The Philippines recorded victories over Belize, Curaçao, Macau, and Aruba during its 10-match campaign.
The Filipinos edged Belize 1-0 before producing their highest-scoring performance in an 8-1 demolition of Curaçao.
They followed with a 2-0 victory over Macau and defeated Aruba 5-2 in their penultimate match.
The Philippines also suffered narrow defeats against several international opponents.
Morocco defeated the Filipinos 2-0, while Liberia escaped with a 1-0 victory.
Zimbabwe prevailed 3-2 before Andorra secured its 2-1 win in the final classification match.
The national team’s 19 goals represented an average of 1.9 goals per match, reflecting its ability to create and convert scoring opportunities against opponents from different footballing regions.
The Philippines also conceded an average of two goals per game, highlighting areas for improvement as the young players continue their development.
Global tournament develops young football talent
The inaugural FIFA U15 World Cup & Festival was organized as part of world football governing body FIFA’s efforts to expand grassroots development and provide international competition opportunities for young players.
The tournament introduced an eight-a-side format, with matches consisting of two 20-minute halves.
The modified competition format was designed to increase player involvement, encourage attacking football, and provide more opportunities for young athletes to develop technical and tactical skills.
A total of 189 national teams participated in the event, making it the largest FIFA-organized football competition in terms of participating countries.
The tournament featured 932 matches and 4,505 goals, with 187 participating teams recording at least one victory.
Spain and Czechia advanced to the championship match of the competition, which concluded Oct. 30.
For the Philippines, the tournament provided exposure to different playing styles and opportunities to assess the development of its emerging football talents.
The national team’s participation also demonstrated the continuing importance of regional football programs in identifying and nurturing players for international competition.
In Iloilo and Negros Occidental, where football has deep community roots, the performances of Caligdong, Rendon, Oliverio, and Enario offered another example of the region’s contribution to the national sport.
Although the Philippines finished outside the top 100, its four victories and competitive performances against international opponents provided valuable experience for a young squad competing in its first global tournament. (PFF)
