Eala sweeps Australian foe to advance in Hong Kong Open
By Leobert Julian A. de la Peña

Alex Eala made a triumphant return to the Hong Kong Open after defeating Australia’s Emerson Jones, 6-4, 6-3, to advance to the Round of 16 on Nov. 3, 2026, at the Victoria Park Tennis Stadium.
Entering the Round of 32 clash with a new career-high WTA World No. 17 ranking, Eala still put on an offensive masterclass despite struggling with her serve.
The 21-year-old Filipina ace made up for her four double faults by doubling down on her baseline attacks, a department that separated her from Jones, who just didn’t have enough firepower to deal with Eala’s groundstroke efficiency.
Eala proved to be too much after immediately cruising to a comfortable 4-0 lead in the first set, but Jones countered by winning three consecutive games to pull within a game, 4-3, shifting the lopsided affair into a mano-a-mano slugfest.
In an anticlimactic finish to the set, Jones’ level of play suddenly dropped, allowing Eala to regain control before sealing the 1-0 lead with a hold in the 10th game.
Equipped with the much-needed momentum, Eala replicated her red-hot start in the second set as she gradually found her serving rhythm to build a 4-1 advantage.
Unfortunately for Jones, a costly double fault in the sixth game gifted Eala another break, helping her notch a 5-1 lead and move a game away from completing the sweep.
Jones showed some composure in the seventh and eighth games after staging a two-game comeback, highlighted by a break and a hold that spoiled any early celebration for Eala.
Eala then got back to work in the final game, establishing control of the game’s pace with back-to-back down-the-line forehand winners to reach match point at 40-15.
Jones managed to win a point that boosted her chances of forcing a deuce, but Eala put the icing on the cake with a booming serve to secure her place in the Round of 16.
“Super happy to be here in Hong Kong,” Eala said after the win.
“Also happy with the performance. Super happy to be in front of you guys once again. There are a few places in the world that would be better to cap off this season filled with you guys here in Hong Kong, close to home.”
Awaiting Eala in the Round of 16 is Czech ace Tereza Valentova, who earlier prevailed over Japan’s Himeno Sakatsume, 6-3, 7-5.
