The Iloilo City government has rolled out cooling centers in three areas identified with high heat index levels to provide temporary relief amid extreme heat conditions.
The cooling stations are located along Diversion Road in Mandurriao near the Diversion overpass, at Jalandoni Bridge in General Luna, and at Plazoleta Gay in City Proper—areas that have recorded elevated heat index readings.
Personnel from the General Services Office began installing the skeletal structures of the cooling centers on Wednesday, April 29.
Engr. Neil Ravena, executive director of the Crisis Management Council, said the structures were targeted for completion by April 30, with the installation of solar panels and electrical systems expected within the week.
“We are making sure that everything is done this week so it will be functional next week,” he said.
Ravena said users are advised to stay for only 30 minutes to one hour, unless medical attention is required, to ensure others can also access the facility.
Each cooling center is equipped with air-conditioning units, chairs, and a water dispenser, and can accommodate up to 20 individuals at a time.
“These areas will serve as temporary resting places for our residents while waiting for public utility vehicles or taxis, to help them avoid the effects of high heat index,” City Mayor Raisa Treñas-Chu said in a statement.
The cooling stations will operate daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., according to Treñas-Chu.
The mayor added that the initiative will be closely monitored, with the possibility of expanding to more areas if proven effective.
Personnel from the City Social Welfare and Development Office and the City Health Office will be deployed to manage the facilities, assist users, and respond to emergencies.
They will also monitor the condition and blood pressure of individuals using the centers.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration has warned that heat index levels in several parts of the country, including Iloilo, may reach dangerous levels during the dry season, prompting local governments to implement mitigation measures such as cooling centers.
