The province of Guimaras produced a total of 15 metric tons (MT) of corn in the second quarter of 2020, more than twice the volume in the same period in 2019 at 7MT, or an increment of 114 percent, according to the generated data on Crops Survey of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
Both white and yellow corn increased production in the second quarter of 2020 compared to the same quarter in 2019.
Yellow corn increased by 75percent at 7MT from 4MT while white corn increased by 166.70 percent at 8MT in 2020 from 3MT a year ago (See Figure 1).
White corn accounted for 53.33 percent of the 15MT corn yield, while the yellow corn accounted for 46.67 percent (7MT).
“The increase on corn produce during the second quarter of this year is attributed to the 20 percent expansion on cornfield area harvested, from 10 hectares (has.) in the previous year to 12 has. this 2020,” PSA-Guimaras Provincial Statistical Officer Nelida B. Losare explained.

In terms of area harvested by corn type, white corn area increased by 33.33 percent at 8 has. from 6.00 has. in Q2 2019 while area of white corn remained unchanged at 4 has. in the second quarter of 2019 and 2020 (See Figure 2).
White corn farms contributed 66.67 percent to the total area harvested, while the remaining 33.33 percent was for yellow corn.
In Region VI, Guimaras contributed 0.04 percent to the 34,214.38MT of the regional corn production, the least among the six provinces of Western Visayas.
“The estimates of corn production and area harvested are generated from the quarterly Corn Production Survey (CPS) conducted by the PSA,” Losare said.
