The province of Guimaras produced 681 metric tons (MT) of palay in the second quarter (Q2) of 2020, a 312.73 percent increase against the 165-MT yield in Q2 2019, according to the generated data by Quarterly Palay Production Survey (PPS) of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
More than two-thirds, or 77.97 percent, of the yield came from irrigated palay with 531 MT, while 150 MT were from rainfed palay or 22.03 percent of the province’s total palay produce.
Both rice sources increased compared to the palay yield by ecosystem in Q2 2019.

Rainfed palay production significantly increased by 455.56 percent while the irrigated palay improved by 284.78 percent.
Similarly, area of palay harvested in Q2 2020 increased by 107.59 percent at 301 hectares, with irrigated palay taking up 65.78 percent and rainfed palay taking up 34.22 percent, compared to 145 hectares in Q2 2019.

In Western Visayas, Guimaras contributed 681 MT (0.56%) to the total palay production of the region, while Capiz has the highest contribution of 40.68 percent (49,297.01 MT) followed by Negros Occidental (22.88%) and Iloilo (15.62%).
The Quarterly PPS is one of the major agricultural surveys conducted by the PSA where estimates of production and harvest area of palay are generated from four survey rounds in a year: January, April, July, and October.
