BACOLOD CITY — A 12-year-old Grade 6 pupil died after drowning in a river in Barangay Vista Alegre here on Wednesday, cutting short his preparations for graduation.
The victim was set to celebrate his 13th birthday in March and was preparing for his elementary graduation. He was the youngest of four siblings.
Reports said the boy and several classmates went to the river after a half-day of classes.
The victim reportedly jumped into the water and accidentally struck a classmate’s head, causing him to hit his own chin.
The impact caused him to lose consciousness and sink beneath the water’s surface.
A nearby resident who was washing clothes witnessed the incident and attempted to help, but the depth of the water delayed the rescue.
A few minutes later, the victim was pulled from the river and rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The city government extended assistance to the bereaved family, in line with its commitment to support residents during times of crisis.
The local government also conveyed its condolences and pledged continued support and coordination with concerned agencies during the difficult period.
Mayor Greg Gasataya reminded parents, guardians and schools to closely supervise children’s activities, especially near bodies of water, to help prevent similar tragedies.
