The Golden State Warriors added a major piece to their already talented coaching staff by tapping Frank Vogel as their new associate head coach, the team announced on July 13, 2026.
Vogel officially replaced veteran mentor Terry Stotts, who is set to leave the Warriors after two years as lead assistant coach and offensive coordinator.
Before joining Golden State, Vogel served as a coaching consultant and a full-time assistant coach for the Dallas Mavericks from 2024 to 2026.
However, the Mavericks didn’t renew his contract following Jason Kidd’s departure and the organization’s massive coaching overhaul, which included hiring NCAA champion Dusty May.
Vogel’s entry into the coaching free-agent market came just in time for Golden State, as the departures of Stotts and Jerry Stackhouse left critical vacancies on the Western Conference team.
The former NBA champion will now work side by side with Steve Kerr, who inked a two-year contract extension in May.
Vogel still has one of the best coaching résumés in the league, having led the Los Angeles Lakers to the 2019–2020 NBA title in the NBA bubble amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Golden State is looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2026 NBA season, in which the team finished 10th in the West with a 37–45 record.
With the injured Jimmy Butler and Stephen Curry sidelined for most of the post-All-Star break, the Warriors couldn’t find a consistent groove and failed to qualify for the SoFi NBA Play-In Tournament.
With Butler expected to return in the second half of the upcoming season and Curry now healthy, Golden State aims to redeem itself and make another NBA championship run.
