BACOLOD City – The project of the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) in Negros Occidental on production and dispersal of quality genetics free-range chicken (FRC) increased the income of the farmers livelihood.
The project focused on egg and meat production that ensures food security and reduction of poverty among Negrenses, according to a press release from the PVO.
The positive impact of the governments project is reflected by the accomplishment of a group of 30 Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries under its Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP).
Humayan Nena Farmers Association (Hunefa) led by Josephine Maguad initially purchased 520 heads of FRC from the Provincial Breeding Center and Dairy Farm in La Granja, La Carlota City in March 2019.
Their venture in FRC production inspired members of the association to buy additional 4,300 heads of FRC worth P215,000.
The FRC were then distributed to Hunefa members.
Meanwhile, the PVO is distributing at least 500 FRC heads per week to different animal raiser beneficiaries of the Negros First Animal Livelihood Program.
This will benefit thousands of rural households for their additional or alternative source of income.
PVO head Renante Decena said the continuing FRC dispersal helped the province maintain its standing as the top producer of backyard chicken in the country.
