Filipinas boost Asian Games quarterfinal bid with Hong Kong win

The Philippine women’s national football team inched closer to an Asian Games quarterfinal berth after blanking Hong Kong, 2-0, at Gifu Nagaragawa Stadium in Japan on Sept. 17, 2026.

Fresh off a 1-1 draw in their opening game against Uzbekistan, the Filipinas shrugged off their debut jitters and quickly pounced on Hong Kong with an early conversion at the 11:45 mark of the first half.

Forward Skye Leach kicked off the Filipinas’ dream start as she found the back of the net with a follow-up goal off Inday Tolentin’s missed header.

After a well-calculated cross, Hong Kong’s goalkeeper quickly deflected the ball, but Tolentin was there in the penalty area to send out the initial header.

Hong Kong’s backline crowded the box, but Leach recovered possession and was in the right place at the right time to give the Filipinas a 1-0 lead.

Hong Kong tightened its defensive coverage and avoided another miscue until the halftime whistle, keeping the Filipinas scoreless for the next 33 minutes of the Group C matchup.

After a passive offensive approach in the first half, Hong Kong caught the Filipinas off guard with an electric start in the second half as it deployed more offense on the wings by firing long through balls.

However, Philippines goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel denied two attempts from Hong Kong, preventing it from equalizing the match and gaining momentum.

The Filipinas doubled their lead 18 minutes into the second half, courtesy of Mallie Ramirez’s precise conversion.

Substitute Megan Murray generated the offensive sequence off a well-placed cross from the right corner, which Ramirez controlled perfectly before finding her balance and firing the wide-open shot.

Hong Kong desperately tried to storm back and pushed the ball with pace in the remaining 30 minutes of regulation, but the Philippines defense did its work, holding the challengers scoreless heading into the final match of the elimination phase.

The Filipinas will look to formalize their Asian Games quarterfinal berth with a win or draw against China on Sept. 21 at 3 p.m. at Gifu Nagaragawa Stadium.
