Aby Maraño officially retires from professional volleyball

For more than two decades, she left it all on the court.

After an illustrious 22-year professional volleyball career, Abigail “Aby” Maraño finally decided to step away from the sport that molded her into a winner, champion, and true leader.

Maraño’s official retirement was announced through her Instagram account on Sept. 16, 2026, and was immediately flooded with appreciative comments from her former teammates, rivals, coaches, and several fellow Filipino athletes.

“Some goodbyes hurt more than the others. And this one hurts more than I ever imagined,” Maraño posted.

“Today, with a heart that is both incredibly heavy and grateful, I am announcing my retirement from professional volleyball. Hindi ito isang overnight decision. For 22 years, ito ang mundo ko.”

Maraño last saw action in the Premier Volleyball League, playing for the Nxled Chameleons following the Chery Tiggo Crossovers’ corporate exit from the league.

The superstar middle blocker retires with one of the most decorated resumes in volleyball, having won three UAAP titles with the De La Salle University Lady Spikers and two UAAP Most Valuable Player awards.

Maraño then brought her winning mentality to the Philippine Super Liga, where she won six championships with the F2 Logistics Cargo Movers.

During that historic PSL campaign, Maraño was an eight-time Best Middle Blocker while juggling duties as team captain of the Philippine women’s national volleyball team.

After her stint in the PSL, Maraño and the Cargo Movers moved to the PVL, but their dominant run ended when F2 Logistics disbanded in 2023.

Maraño quickly found a new home and signed with Chery Tiggo, helping the team reach the playoffs multiple times from 2024 to 2025 before later transferring to Nxled.

“Between the tears and the sadness, may isang bagay akong nararamdaman na hindi ko rin ine-expect: KAPAYAPAAN,” Maraño added.

“Thank you for the most beautiful 22 years of my life as a player. And now, with a grateful heart, no regrets, and so much excitement for what lies ahead. It’s time to turn the page to the next chapter. Forever your Tyang Aby.”
