EMB: Boracay establishments 100% compliant with water standards

All establishments on Boracay Island subjected to fecal coliform tests have been found 100 percent compliant, according to the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) 6.

Atty. Ramar Niel Pascua, Regional Director of EMB 6, announced during the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas Program on July 18 that most establishments, including their treatment facilities, have met the water quality requirements.

“This compliance is crucial to maintaining Boracay as one of the world’s top tourist destinations,” Atty. Pascua remarked.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) aims to keep Boracay’s waters clean by enforcing strict quality guidelines.

Since the island’s closure in 2018 for rehabilitation, DENR Region 6 has continuously monitored and maintained water quality, ensuring it remains a favorite spot for tourists.

Atty. Pascua emphasized the rigorous efforts to uphold these standards.

“Every month, we bring samples from Boracay to our laboratory for testing. At the same time, Boracay Island Water Company and Boracay Tubig have treatment facilities where their clients’ wastewater is processed. During the closure, we implemented individual sewage treatment plants (STPs) as required by a memorandum order,” he said.

He explained that resorts with 40 rooms or more must have individual STPs, and in other areas of Boracay, those with 50 rooms or more are also required to have STPs.

“We conduct regular sampling at these facilities, which is why we maintain standards within acceptable levels,” he added.

He further highlighted the importance of maintaining these standards for the island’s reputation and safety.

“Boracay is a main destination not only in the Philippines but globally. It’s important to maintain the water quality standard to proudly showcase Boracay and ensure the safety of everyone visiting the island.”

Meanwhile, DENR has yet to determine the carrying capacity of the island to prevent overcrowding and preserve its beauty. This issue will be discussed further with other agencies.
