The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has launched the first Philippine National Standard (PNS) for parol during a ceremony in San Fernando, Pampanga, to promote safe, high-quality, and globally competitive Filipino lanterns.
The new standard, PNS 2296-1:2025 – Lamps and Related Equipment – parol – Part 1: Construction and Marking Requirements, outlines the safety and durability specifications for both indoor and outdoor use.
Developed in collaboration with UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE), the initiative supports President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to empower local industries and protect consumers.
DTI Secretary Cristina A. Roque said the new standard will enhance product quality while safeguarding Filipino buyers.
“More than ensuring product safety, these standards uplift our parol makers whose craftsmanship reflects Filipino pride,” Secretary Roque said.
“By guiding them toward quality and reliability, we empower their businesses to grow and thrive globally while protecting Filipino consumers.”
Fair Trade Group Assistant Secretary Atty. Regino D. Mallari, Jr. described the standard as a critical step toward sustainability and industry growth.
“Ang pagkakaroon ng kauna-unahang PNS para sa parol ay isang mahalagang hakbang towards economic growth and sustainability in the parol industry,” Asec. Mallari said.
“Bagaman ito ay boluntaryo at hindi sapilitan, nagbibigay ito ng malinaw na gabay para sa mga manufacturer upang makalikha ng mga produktong dekalidad, ligtas, at maaasahan para sa mga mamimili.”
The launch, part of National Standards Week, included parol exhibits and presentations from ULSE, UL Solutions, the Design Center of the Philippines, and various DTI offices.
The DTI Bureau of Philippine Standards (BPS), which serves as the country’s national standards body, led the development and coordination of the initiative.
The BPS is mandated to formulate and implement standardization policies to improve product quality, consumer protection, and industrial competitiveness.
