Better transportation from Iloilo City to central Iloilo towns and vice versa is expected following the ongoing improvement of the Mandurriao-San Miguel-Alimodian-Maasin-Cabatuan Road by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
The DPWH Iloilo 4th District Engineering Office recently completed the asphalt overlaying of this key road, particularly in San Miguel town.
The PHP61.236-million project, funded under the FY 2024 Regular Infrastructure Program, involved overlaying 1.7 lane-kilometers of concrete road with asphalt.
This is a continuation of a previous 2.6 lane-kilometer asphalt overlay project along the same road network, covering parts of San Miguel and Alimodian towns and costing PHP94.087 million.
Citing a report from District Engineer Mario G. Soriano, Regional Director Sanny Boy O. Oropel said the upgraded road ensures more convenient, faster, and cost-efficient travel from Iloilo City to several central Iloilo towns.
“This road improvement will significantly extend the life of the existing concrete pavement without the need for complete repaving, ensuring safety for all road users,” Oropel said.
He added that the overlay provides a smoother driving surface compared to patching or sealing methods.
Reflectorized thermoplastic pavement markings were also installed to enhance safety for motorists, pedestrians, and residents, especially at night.
“These pavement markings guide motorists to stay in their lanes and warn pedestrians to avoid stepping within the lane markings to prevent accidents,” Oropel explained.
Meanwhile, Soriano said asphalt roads are cost-efficient and help reduce noise pollution.
He noted that overlaying roads with asphalt improves mobility, enhances the delivery of goods and services, supports economic growth, and ensures better access to basic services.
Soriano added that asphalt overlaying provides various benefits, including extended pavement lifespan, improved safety, aesthetic upgrades, quick installation, and environmental advantages, making it an ideal solution for road maintenance. (DPWH)
