Creamline reclaimed its place atop the Premier Volleyball League after surviving Cignal in a tense five-set battle, 25-23, 22-25, 25-16, 16-25, 15-11, to capture the 2026 All-Filipino Conference championship Thursday at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Cool Smashers ended a run of three title-less conferences by winning their 11th PVL championship and eighth All-Filipino Conference crown before a crowd of 17,358.
The victory also marked Creamline’s 15th Finals appearance, extending a dynasty built on depth, composure, and years of championship experience.
Tots Carlos delivered the decisive plays in the fifth set, hammering a crucial kill before blocking Vanie Gandler’s attack to seal the four-point win and deny Cignal a chance to force a sudden-death Game 3.
The two-hour, 23-minute match tested Creamline’s resolve, particularly in the deciding set, where the Cool Smashers trailed 6-8 against a Cignal side playing with confidence and urgency.
Creamline steadied itself behind Jema Galanza, who broke through with a timely hit, and Jia de Guzman, who caught the defense with a clever 1-2 play.
After Tin Tiamzon kept Cignal ahead with a conversion, Creamline capitalized on an Erika Santos attack error to tie the frame before Galanza pushed the Cool Smashers in front for only their third lead of the decider.
The sequence highlighted Creamline’s patience against a Cignal defense that repeatedly forced long rallies and difficult swings.
The tension rose when a disputed block touch denied Creamline a point and allowed Cignal to tie the score at 10.
Carlos responded with a composed second-effort attack, and another Santos error gave Creamline a two-point cushion.
Pangs Panaga then came through with a timely block on Gandler, shifting momentum further toward the Cool Smashers.
Gandler answered to trim the deficit to 11-13, but Creamline emerged from a huddle with Carlos taking charge of the final stretch.
Carlos blasted a kill before rising for the championship-clinching block that triggered Creamline’s celebration as white confetti fell inside the arena.
“I’m speechless,” said de Guzman, who matched Cignal setter Gel Cayuna’s 31 excellent sets. “Lahat ng emotion ngayon, I can’t really describe it. I’m just really happy kasi trinabaho talaga namin ito – five sets. Pinahirapan kami ng Cignal pero thankful kami that in the end, tinyaga namin.”
Cignal had appeared ready to extend the series early in the fifth set, with Santos and Gandler powering the Super Spikers to an 8-6 lead.
Creamline, however, relied on its championship composure to absorb the pressure, turn defense into offense, and execute cleaner plays in the closing stretch.
Libero Jen Nierva, playing in her first Finals with Creamline, said the victory carried special meaning.
“Super saya, very overwhelming ang pakiramdam kasi it’s been three or four years since I last played in a championship. Iba yung pressure, iba yung feeling inside the court, and we’re just very happy that we made it.”
Bernadeth Pons anchored Creamline’s title-clinching performance with an MVP-caliber triple-double of 22 points, 25 excellent digs, and 15 receptions.
Pons, who played a supporting role in Game 1, gave Creamline the stability it needed through scoring, floor defense, and serve reception during the match’s most turbulent stretches.
Carlos backed Pons with 18 points, while Galanza and Panaga added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Galanza also finished with 16 receptions, giving Creamline another steady presence in transition.
Cignal outperformed Creamline in attacks, 71-61, while both teams finished with 10 blocks each.
The Cool Smashers made the difference by converting 28 points off Cignal’s errors while limiting their own miscues to 16.
Gandler led Cignal with 26 points in a determined effort to push the series to a deciding match.
Santos added 21 points, while Tiamzon delivered 14 markers for the Super Spikers.
Roselyn Aquino and Cayuna chipped in eight points apiece for Cignal.
Creamline showed both dominance and vulnerability in the title match, controlling the third set by nine points before yielding the fourth by the same margin.
That exchange set up a winner-take-all fifth set that tested the Cool Smashers’ conditioning, execution, and nerve.
In the end, Creamline’s experience in high-pressure matches proved decisive as the Cool Smashers stayed sharper when the margin for error disappeared.
The championship also marked a triumphant return for de Guzman, who helped build Creamline into the PVL’s benchmark franchise.
For Nierva, the title was her first with the Cool Smashers and a milestone in her return to a championship stage. (PVL)
