With Eli Rousseaux setting the early standard, pressure is mounting for the rest of the Premier Volleyball League’s reinforcements to match, if not surpass, the Farm Fresh standout’s explosive 38-point performance last Thursday.
The Belgian national team standout’s stunning debut not only powered her team but also sent a clear message: the race for the Reinforced Conference crown is wide open—and fiercely competitive.
The action resumes today (Saturday) at the Dasmariñas Arena in Cavite, where another slate of imports looks to make its mark. Chery Tiggo’s Cuban ace Yunieska Batista and ZUS Coffee’s Anna DeBeer take center stage in the 4 p.m. opener, both hoping to provide their squads with an early edge in a conference where no team appears untouchable.
Later, at 6:30 p.m., it will be Creamline’s Courtney Schwan and Akari’s Annie Mitchem’s turn under the spotlight, as they aim to prove themselves in the highly anticipated second game of the doubleheader—one expected to match or even exceed the intensity of Thursday’s matches.
Two-time champion Petro Gazz wasted no time asserting its title intentions, sweeping Galeries Tower in convincing fashion behind the strong showing of returnee Lindsey Vander Weide. But it was Rousseaux’s electric all-around display in the nightcap—filled with power hits, finesse shots, and unrelenting energy—that became the benchmark and talking point heading into the weekend.
That performance has upped the ante for the rest of the imports, especially DeBeer and Mitchem, whose PVL debuts were delayed due to pending International Transfer Certificates (ITCs). Last Tuesday’s originally scheduled matches, which were converted into all-Filipino faceoffs due to the impasse, have since been ordered replayed by league organizer Sports Vision following discussions with the teams involved.
Now with all ITC issues resolved, the Reinforced Conference, backed by ICTSI, Milcu, Mikasa, and Fabriano, is ready to hit full throttle.
What makes this edition of the Reinforced Conference so compelling is the sheer parity. Unlike previous seasons where one or two teams were clear-cut favorites, the current landscape is filled with uncertainty. Teams boast imports of varied pedigree—some with international accolades, others unproven but brimming with promise—and a deep local talent pool equally eager to rise to the occasion.
Batista and DeBeer’s duel in the opener is expected to be more than just a battle of imports. Chery Tiggo will rely on a solid local core led by Ara Galang, Cess Robles, Renee Peñafiel, Shaya Adorador, Imee Hernandez, Seth Rodriguez, and the returning Mylene Paat.
On the other side, ZUS Coffee counters with a rising group of talents, including Riza Nogales, Chinnie Arroyo, Fiola Ceballos, Jovelyn Gonzaga, AC Miner, Kate Santiago, Mycah Go, and national team standout Thea Gagate.
The main event promises fireworks as the defending champion Cool Smashers aim to keep their throne intact. With Courtney Schwan expected to add firepower, the crowd favorites also feature local stalwarts Michele Gumabao, Alyssa Valdez, Jema Galanza, and the returning Tots Carlos, now cleared to play after a knee injury.
But Akari is not backing down. Led by Mitchem, the Chargers bring a hungry squad with Ivy Lacsina, Grethcel Soltones, Eli Soyud, Chenie Tagaod, Camille Victoria, Ced Domingo, and Fifi Sharma—all poised to challenge the defending champs.
The promise of parity elevates the stakes. With most teams having had little time to integrate their reinforcements, chemistry remains a work in progress. Every match becomes a potential upset. Every player, import or local, becomes a possible game-changer.
The uncertainty creates an atmosphere of genuine excitement. No script is certain. No team is safe. And that’s exactly what could make this conference the most competitive—and most thrilling—yet.
