Cebu Pacific clarifies musical instrument baggage rules

Cebu Pacific reminded passengers traveling with musical instruments that items exceeding the standard hand-carry size allowance may be accommodated through CEB Special Baggage, following a recent incident involving violin-carrying passengers.

The airline said all passengers carrying violins in the incident were able to board their flights and travel as scheduled.

“Some violin cases met the hand-carry size limit of 56cm x 36cm x 23cm and were allowed onboard,” Cebu Pacific said.

For violins that exceeded the size limit, the airline said its airport team worked with the passengers to find a practical solution.

“The violin cases were checked in free of charge, while the instruments themselves were carefully hand-carried by the passengers into the cabin,” Cebu Pacific said.

Cebu Pacific said passengers may purchase CEB Special Baggage during the booking process through the Cebu Pacific mobile app.

The airline said checked-in musical instruments must be packed in hard-shell cases to help protect them during transport.

“Instruments placed in soft cases or gig bags cannot be accepted for check-in, as these do not provide sufficient protection against damage,” Cebu Pacific said.

Aside from musical instruments, Cebu Pacific said sports equipment, surfboards, religious items and balikbayan boxes may also be checked in through CEB Special Baggage.

The airline’s baggage guidance states that musical instruments and religious items may be carried onboard if they are within the 56cm x 36cm x 23cm limit. Cebu Pacific’s general hand-carry policy also allows passengers a total hand-carry allowance of 7 kilograms.

The clarification comes as airlines continue to balance cabin space limits with passenger concerns over fragile or high-value belongings, particularly instruments that may be vulnerable to damage when placed in standard checked baggage.

“We understand that musical instruments are often valuable and deeply personal belongings,” Cebu Pacific said.

The airline encouraged passengers to review baggage size requirements before traveling “so we can help ensure a smooth and comfortable journey for both them and their instruments.”
