Cebu hosts PVL, Spikers’ Turf 10th-season opener

CEBU CITY — Sports Vision Management Group Inc. will bring the Premier Volleyball League and Spikers’ Turf to Cebu for the opening of their landmark 10th season on Oct. 10 at the newly opened SM Seaside Cebu Arena.

The season launch will feature a triple-header highlighted by two PVL matches.

Choco Mucho and Capital1 will open the volleyball festivities at 1 p.m., followed by Creamline against Akari at 6 p.m.

A Spikers’ Turf matchup will complete the triple-header, although the participating teams and match time have yet to be announced.

Taking the season opener outside Metro Manila underscores Cebu’s growing role as a major volleyball hub and expands access to top-level competition for fans in the Visayas.

Organizers expect the high-profile opening to draw a large crowd and set the tone for another major season of Philippine volleyball.

The Cebu launch comes as the PVL and Spikers’ Turf celebrate their 10th season, reflecting the sustained growth of the leagues and volleyball’s expanding reach across the country.

Preparations are underway for the event at the SM Seaside Cebu Arena, which broke ground in 2021 and officially opened to the public in July.

The arena can accommodate more than 25,000 guests and was designed as a multipurpose venue for major sports, entertainment, and other events, according to SM Prime Holdings Inc.

The decision to stage the season-opening festivities in Cebu also highlights the province’s deep volleyball roots and continuing contribution to the sport.

Cebu has produced established stars, emerging players, and athletes who have competed in both the PVL and Spikers’ Turf.

Among prominent PVL players with Cebuano roots are Choco Mucho’s Sisi Rondina of Compostela, Deanna Wong of Minglanilla, and Isa Molde of Catmon.

Farm Fresh players Lorene Toring and Pierre Abellana, Nxled’s Krich Macaslang, and PLDT’s Shiela Kiseo also hail from Cebu.

The Visayas has likewise produced talent in the men’s game, including former Cignal standout Edward Ybañez and VNS’ Jayvee Sumagaysay in the Spikers’ Turf.

Sports Vision has also sought to strengthen the region’s volleyball pipeline through grassroots and developmental competitions.

In 2025, Sports Vision launched the V-League Visayas, a regional collegiate competition featuring six men’s and six women’s teams based in Cebu and affiliated with the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc., or CESAFI.

The league expanded its regional reach in July with the staging of the Panay-Negros tournament in Passi City, Iloilo, providing another platform for emerging volleyball players in the Visayas.

The initiatives are intended to strengthen Cebu and the wider Visayas as a talent pipeline for players seeking to advance to the country’s top professional volleyball leagues.

Against that backdrop, the 10th-season launch carries added significance for regional volleyball.

The Cebu triple-header will also bring some of the country’s biggest volleyball names to a venue establishing itself as a major sports and entertainment destination.

For Sports Vision, staging the opening in Cebu marks both a celebration of a decade of league-building and a broader push to bring professional volleyball beyond Metro Manila.

Cebu’s strong volleyball following is expected to give the PVL and Spikers’ Turf a high-profile start to their historic 10th season.
