Calibration trainings held in Roxas City, Iloilo City, and Lemery

Series of calibration trainings on weights and measures were conducted by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) VI Metrology Laboratory officers in Roxas City, Iloilo City, and Lemery.

Joining the trainings were representatives from the Local Government Units (LGUs) of Roxas City and Lemery as well as representative from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Region VI.

The series of trainings were held upon request of the beneficiary organizations as a way to acquire relevant knowledge about concepts, methods, and skills regarding proper calibration and verification of measuring devices, specifically weighing devices. In addition, said skills can benefit the organization in their daily functions such as enforcement of local ordinances or national standards.

“When enforcing local ordinances, [the participants] will become more confident in making decisions [such as] comparing instrument errors against the maximum permissible error to determine suitability of weighing devices used for commercial transactions,” shares DOST VI Metrology Laboratory Technical Manager Mark V. Rosales, RCh.

Rosales along with Calibration Officer Kirk A. Aguirre served as resource persons in all three venues.

Various topics tackled focused more on weighing devices. Pre-tests and post-tests of the devices also took place during the trainings.

“There seems to be a lingering notion that loading a test weight on a weighing device is already calibration. Such misconceptions were clarified and corrected. [The participants] were also taught how to maintain their instruments particularly their test weights,” adds Rosales.

The legal basis for enforcing weighing device accuracy and reliability was also discussed, especially when commercial transactions are involved.(KJRGagajena/DOSTVI-KMU)
