The International Olympic Committee (IOC) executive board announced that breakdancing will be formally included in the list of events for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics.
Breakdancing will be the first-ever DanceSport event to be included in the Olympics, which has been previously staged in the Youth Olympics.
Organizers bared that there will be 16 participants for both the boys and girls category where everyone will be staged in a one vs one format battle.
“Today is a historic occasion, not only for b-boys and b-girls but for all dancers around the world,” said Shawn Tay, president of the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF).
More details of breakdancing’s inclusion in the Olympics will be released soon but the IOC also shared that skateboarding, sports climbing, and surfing – three games canceled in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics – will be staged in Paris.
“The WDSF could not be prouder to have breaking included at Paris 2024, and we thank everyone who helped make it possible: the executive board of the IOC, the Paris 2024 organizers, the WDSF staff and, most importantly, the breaking community itself. It was a true team effort to get to this moment and we will redouble our efforts in the lead-up to the Olympic Games to make sure the breaking competition at Paris 2024 will be unforgettable,” added Tay.
