BACOLOD CITY — A 10-year-old boy died from drowning in a pit in Sitio Nasuli, Barangay Camalobalo, Hinigaran, Negros Occidental on Wednesday.
The victim was an elementary pupil and a resident of Barangay Baga-as.
According to police, the victim’s grandfather reported that the boy, together with his classmates, went to a constructed dumpsite to swim in a pit after classes that afternoon.
While swimming, the boy reportedly experienced muscle cramps and failed to reach a safe area.
Rescuers responded and brought the victim to a clinic, where he was declared dead.
Police Lt. Col. Jovil Sedel, chief of Hinigaran Municipal Police Station, said the children might have just passed by the water-filled pit on their way home, and that the water may have accumulated from recent rainfall.
