BAROTAC NUEVO, Iloilo – The Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) is preparing to launch Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Maritime Transportation programs in Academic Year 2026–2027 with full support from Iloilo 4th district Rep. Ferjenel Biron.
Biron, dubbed the “Father of ISUFST,” championed the institution’s elevation from college to university through Republic Acts 10604 and 11012 and continues to influence its development as a board regent and trustee.
University President Dr. Nordy Siason Jr. said Biron’s vision aligns with ISUFST’s aim to offer high-impact and accessible programs grounded in community needs.
The BSN program is planned for the Main Campus–Poblacion site in Barotac Nuevo, while the BSMT will be hosted at the Tiwi site, both within Biron’s legislative district.
Biron has emphasized that no student in the Fourth District should be hindered by distance or lack of opportunity, pledging comprehensive support from financing to interagency coordination.
He also endorsed converting the current Tiwi campus library into a Maritime Building, with the library moving to a new PHP22.5‑million University Learning Center that will include a Fisheries and Marine Sciences Museum.
The BSN proposal received a boost from a July 2 consultation with Philippine Nurses Association National President Dr. Rosana Grace Belo‑Delariarte.
Meanwhile, the BSMT program is undergoing benchmarking and compliance review under CHED‑MARINA Joint Memorandum Circular No. 2 series of 2023.
ISUFST plans to begin each program with a class of 40 students, aligned with regional workforce demands, and recruitment will focus on ensuring highly qualified enrollees.
Final approval for both programs is pending the Commission on Higher Education’s review.
Biron’s previous projects include the forthcoming PHP270‑million Fisheries Complex and PHP80‑million Sports Complex at the Tiwi campus, featuring an Olympic‑size pool and rubberized track.
Dr. Siason said the university is entering a transformative era led by leaders who listen and act.
He added that beyond resources, Biron’s appreciation for the university’s mission is what will turn vision into reality.
ISUFST, once solely fisheries-focused, now offers 27 undergraduate and 16 graduate programs to over 8,500 students across five campuses, supported by 280 faculty—half of whom hold doctorates—and is planning to introduce a Doctor of Education program. (Herman Lagon/PAMMCO)
