BACOLOD CITY – The agricultural sector in Negros Occidental incurred more than PHP 16.3 million in damage due to heavy rains triggered by the shear line and the northeast monsoon, locally known as amihan, according to the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist as of Feb. 5.
Rice farmers were among the hardest hit, with total damage to rice production estimated at PHP 4,465,052.59.
Corn farmers sustained losses amounting to PHP 86,100, while high-value crops recorded damage worth PHP 847,500.
The fisheries sector posted the largest share of losses, with total damage across the province reaching PHP 10,901,430.
Data from the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist showed that 444 rice farmers in four local government units were affected, with crops damaged on 236.74 hectares across 21 barangays.
In one local government unit, four corn farmers in two barangays reported losses covering 3.07 hectares.
Five high-value crop growers in three barangays of another local government unit also reported farm damage.
Coastal communities were likewise affected, as 85 fishermen from 10 barangays in two local government units sustained losses due to disrupted fishing operations and damage to aquatic resources.
The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist said assessments are ongoing to determine the full extent of the damage and that coordination with concerned agencies is underway to provide assistance to affected farmers and fisherfolk.
