Bacolod City joins the National Arts Month Celebration with the 7th Kuris Theatre Festival and Workshops – an annual convergence of theater practitioners, scholars, artists from Negros, Panay and other parts of the country – on February 18-22, 2020.
Formally organized by the Teatrokon – West Visayas Theater Network in 2014, the festival aims to provide a venue for theater artists to showcase their works, strengthen their network and linkages; and share the different forms of theatre and performance to the Negrense Community.
This year’s Kuris celebrates the theme of “Theatre Without Boundaries” by showcasing the performances in various spaces and exploring topics on mental health, human rights, children, women’s & LGBT issues, environment, family and values, existence and love.
Inspired by the Hiligaynon term “Kuris”, which means “scribbles”, “squiggles”, and “sketches”, the name of the Festival denotes representation of thoughts, ideas, musings that attempt to articulate the artists’ sensibilities through theatre.
The event is a collaboration of Teatrokon: West Visayas Theatre Network in collaboration with The PerfLab, Women Playwrights’ International-Philippines. University of St. La Salle-Bacolod, International Theatre Institute – International Playwright’s Forum (IPF), with the support of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, Province of Negros Occidental, City Government of Bacolod, Sacred Heart Seminary, and The Negros Museum..
The festival will feature Keynote Message of August Andong (Women Playwrights International President) on “The Importance and Contribution of Theatre and the Arts to the Creative Economy and Artist Sustainability,” a Tribute to Peque Gallaga and Workshops on Production Design, Stage Management, Technical Theatre, Movement Dramaturgy, and Playwriting.
