BORACAY ISLAND, Malay, Aklan — A Chinese couple allegedly linked to the kidnapping and killing of Filipino-Chinese businessman Anson Que and his driver was arrested early evening of April 25 at a helipad in Barangay Yapak, Boracay.
Police identified the suspects as Liang Jianhua, 40, and her husband, Gong ZongLian, 38, both residents of Sta. Cruz, Manila.
Brigadier General Jack Wanky, Western Visayas police chief, said the couple was about to board a hired helicopter when authorities arrested them.
Wanky said the two were arrested for violations of Articles 172 and 178 of the Revised Penal Code.
Article 172 involves falsification by private individuals and the use of falsified documents, while Article 178 covers using fictitious names and concealing true names.
They were also arrested for violation of Commonwealth Act No. 142, or the “Anti-Alias Law.”
Verification revealed the couple allegedly presented fictitious identification cards.
Wanky said they used different names to book accommodations in two posh hotels in Boracay Island.
During the arrest, the couple was with three young boys, believed to be the sons of Wenli Gong, a Chinese woman and one of the suspects in the Que case.
Wanky said the couple claimed to be Gong’s parents.
“But we’re still checking on the information if they are indeed Gong’s parents and they’re just 40 and 38 years old,” he said.
He pointed out that Gong is 29 years old, which would mean her alleged parents were 11 and 9 when she was born.
Police had been tracking the couple while also pursuing Gong, one of the prime suspects in the kidnapping and murder of Que and his driver Armanie Pabillo.
Authorities learned that Gong, the three boys, and the couple arrived in Boracay on April 10, a day after Que and Pabillo’s bodies were found in Rodriguez, Rizal.
They were initially set to stay until May 5.
Wanky said they paid around PHP500,000 to a travel agency for their travel, accommodation, and activities in Boracay.
The group even rented a yacht for about PHP100,000.
After Gong’s identity was exposed, she allegedly separated from the couple, leaving the three boys in their care.
They previously attempted to leave Boracay on April 21 but backed out after spotting policemen at Godofredo P. Ramos Airport in Barangay Caticlan, Malay.
They were reportedly planning to head to Clark Airport.
It was believed the couple and the boys returned to Boracay until new air transport arrangements were made.
Wanky said Gong may have already left Boracay but is believed to still be within Region 6.
Meanwhile, the three boys are now under the custody of the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office.
Authorities earlier announced a PHP5 million reward for information leading to Gong’s arrest.
The suspect, who also goes by the names Huang Yanling and Kelly Tan Lim, was last seen in Boracay Island on April 21.
It can be recalled that Que, owner of Elison Steel, and his driver were kidnapped in Pasay City.
Their bodies were discovered on April 9 in Rodriguez, Rizal.
Reports indicated the victim’s family paid a hefty ransom for Que’s release, but he and his driver were still killed.
Several suspects, including alleged mastermind David Tan Liao, have already been arrested.
