Alex Eala rallies past Gibson into Pan Pacific quarterfinals
By Leobert Julian A. de la Peña

Alex Eala showed poise under pressure, rallying from a set down to defeat Australia’s Talia Gibson, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0, and secure a spot in the quarterfinals of the Toray Pan Pacific Open on Oct. 28, 2026, at Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo, Japan.
After being undone by a string of unforced errors during the most crucial stretch of the first set, Eala regained her footing in the last two sets, turning the tables with a dominant comeback to spoil Gibson’s upset attempt.
Unlike her convincing victory over British challenger Mika Stojsavljevic, Eala faced a tougher test against Gibson, digging deep after falling behind by a set.
Both players held serve through the first seven games, but Gibson found the perfect opening after securing a crucial break in the eighth game to build a 5-3 advantage.
Eala answered with a break of her own to close the gap to 4-5, but Gibson broke her serve in the 10th game to take the opening set.
The second set marked Eala’s resurgence as the Filipina ace took a risk by stepping inside the baseline to attack Gibson’s second serves.
Although Eala already had the tactic in her playbook, executing it against Gibson was a bold decision, as the Australian’s heavy kick serves had made it difficult for the Filipina to read the ball in the first set.
The adjustment came down to Eala’s contact point and the right amount of force, helping her produce more effective returns and put pressure on Gibson’s service games.
Eala’s altered game plan helped her break Gibson’s serve immediately for a 2-0 lead, and she gave her opponent little room to recover before closing the second set with three consecutive games to force a decider.
With momentum on her side and a more effective answer to Gibson’s tricky court coverage, Eala delivered a masterclass in the third set.
Eala handed Gibson a demoralizing bagel, capitalizing on the Australian’s inability to convert crucial points in closely contested games, including a hard-fought final game that went to deuce.
The eighth-seeded Filipina completed the comeback in one hour and 53 minutes, firing nine aces against Gibson’s five to secure her first quarterfinal appearance of the season’s Asian swing.
With the Round of 16 victory, Eala arranged a highly anticipated rematch with Russia’s Diana Shnaider, who also advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Aliaksandra Sasnovich, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.
Shnaider previously got the better of Eala during their Ningbo Open clash on Oct. 22, defeating the Filipina in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.
Can Eala complete her revenge tour and settle the score against Shnaider?
