The Philippine men’s national football team (PMNFT) claimed the top spot in Group A of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers after a commanding 4-1 victory over Timor-Leste on Thursday at the Territory Rugby League Stadium in Darwin, Australia.
Filipino-Norwegian striker Bjorn Martin Kristensen powered the team with all four goals, earning Player of the Match honors and helping the Philippines secure its seventh point in the qualifiers with a +6 goal difference.
“The Philippines played a great game against Timor-Leste tonight and the four goals scored will put extra pressure on Tajikistan,” said Philippine Football Federation (PFF) President John Anthony Gutierrez.
“All goals count now that we’re at the halfway point of the qualifiers as we are inching closer to our aim of re-entering the Asian Cup,” he added.
“With this win, we are primed for a great show on October 14. Our team is hungry to join the Asian Cup again and they are eager to score more goals, not only to qualify but to bring joy to our home fans,” Gutierrez said.
Kristensen opened the scoring in the 15th minute, converting a rebound from his own miss past goalkeeper Georgino Da Silva.
He doubled the lead in the 31st minute with a solo run from near the centerline, outpacing the Timor-Leste defense.
Timorese captain Gali Freitas responded early in the second half, slicing through the Philippine defense to make it 2-1 in the 46th minute.
Kristensen quickly restored the two-goal cushion two minutes later, heading in a rebound from Da Silva’s block of a cross by Dylan DeMuynck.
He sealed the win in the 56th minute, finishing off a counterattack from a long through ball by Sandro Reyes to complete his four-goal performance.
“It’s always good to score goals. Four goals doesn’t happen every game, so I have to take this moment and enjoy it,” said Kristensen.
“And tomorrow, we have to prepare again. The team is doing good. We have a big squad with us now, and you can see we changed a lot. So I think we will be prepared,” he added.
PMNFT Head Coach Carles Cuadrat praised the team’s intensity and resilience after a physically demanding match.
“We knew this wouldn’t be an easy match, and it required a lot of intensity to secure the victory,” Cuadrat said.
“I’m very happy with the team and the effort the guys put in; they fought hard to win duels and one-on-one battles, which worked well. To see the team truly willing to win despite long travel and some minor injuries makes me very proud of the guys,” he added.
“It was very important for us that after they scored, we immediately understood we had to go for the third and even the fourth goal, and it happened. The most important thing is that the players took the situation very seriously, but it also serves as a reminder that we cannot relax, as conceding a goal right at the start of the second half is something we have to improve,” Cuadrat said.
The Philippines currently leads Group A at the halfway mark of the qualifiers, boosting its chances of qualifying for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.
The PFF has invited fans to support the national team in their return leg against Timor-Leste on Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. at the New Clark City Football Stadium in Capas, Tarlac.
For Filipino football fans and analysts, the win highlights the team’s growing chemistry under Cuadrat’s system and reinforces the Philippines’ determination to rejoin Asia’s elite football nations.
