It’s all systems go for the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) as its 78 student-athletes will vie for medals and sporting glory at the Regional State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) Sportsfest and Conference 2023 for Western Visayas on Sept. 10-16 in Negros Occidental.
UPV is among the 13 State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) from the region that will compete in this year’s Regional SCUAA hosted by the Carlos Hilado Memorial State University. The various sporting events will be held in the cities of Talisay, Silay, Bacolod, and Victorias.
UPV’s representatives will showcase their skills in badminton, table tennis, swimming, chess, football, and volleyball. They will take part in the men’s and women’s categories of the said sporting events, with the exception of football, as UPV will compete in the men’s category only.
Asst. Prof. Catherine Anecita, UPV Sports Coordinator and faculty member of the Department of Physical Education, during a meeting, said that while she hopes the student-athletes get gold, she emphasized the importance of the student-athletes’ participation to SCUAA, which provides the opportunity to expose them to collegiate competition.
Anecita met with coaches, assistant coaches, chaperones, and various working committees and discussed preparations for the week-long event yesterday, Sept. 7.
This year marks the return of the Regional SCUAA after a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The theme for this year’s event is “Strengthening SUCs Unity through Sports towards Excellence.”
The Regional SCUAA’s opening ceremony will be held on Sept. 10 at the Victorias Sports and Amusement Center in Victorias City. (Mr. Carlson B. Alelis, IPO)
