The Detroit Pistons outplayed the Cleveland Cavaliers in crunch time to pull off a second straight win at home, 107-97, in Game 2 of the NBA Eastern Conference semifinals on May 8, 2026, at Little Caesars Arena.
After allowing the Cavaliers to grab a two-point lead at the start of the fourth quarter, the Pistons stepped on the gas pedal, regrouping at the perfect time to close the game on a 13-6 run in the final three minutes.
Tobias Harris kicked off Detroit’s closing run with a fadeaway jumper against Max Strus’ defense, followed by Cade Cunningham’s 3-pointer with 2:13 left that ballooned the Pistons’ cushion to nine points, 101-92.
Jarrett Allen scored underneath to pull Cleveland within six points, but Ausar Thompson’s follow-up tip-in sealed the deal for Detroit, giving the Pistons an eight-point lead in the final 1:24.
Despite Cunningham’s slow start offensively, Detroit’s franchise cornerstone stepped up when his team needed him most, leading the Pistons to a 2-0 series lead with 25 points, 10 assists, three rebounds, and two blocks.
Cunningham had only eight field goal attempts in the first half, but when Cleveland climbed out of a 14-point hole, the two-way star took matters into his own hands and put Detroit on his back.
The Pistons picked up where they left off with a quick 11-point lead in the first quarter, but a red-hot Donovan Mitchell helped the Cavaliers regain control and stay within striking distance.
Although cold from downtown, Mitchell shifted his point of attack by pressuring the rim and driving aggressively downhill, forcing Detroit head coach J.B. Bickerstaff to reshuffle his frontcourt rotation.
From down 14 points, Mitchell’s individual brilliance helped Cleveland retake the driver’s seat, 81-79, at the 10:13 mark of the fourth quarter.
Just when the Cavaliers thought they could sustain their driving game, the Pistons countered their rim attacks with a 2-3 zone, which they executed perfectly as Jalen Duren anchored the paint with his shot-blocking and contested shots without getting into foul trouble.
Fresh off a grueling seven-game series win against the physical and lengthy Orlando Magic squad, the Pistons looked battle-tested against Cleveland and have yet to drop a playoff game since Game 5 of the first round.
Backstopping Cunningham was Harris, who remained consistent, scoring 21 points on an efficient 9-of-16 shooting, alongside seven rebounds, two steals, and two blocks.
Duncan Robinson shot the lights out from deep, draining five of his nine total attempts to cap the win with 17 points, three boards, three dimes, and three steals.
On the other hand, Mitchell paced the Cavaliers with a game-high 31 points, but his backcourt partner, James Harden, continued to struggle, chipping in only 10 points in 36 minutes of action.
As the series shifts to Ohio, Cleveland will hunt for its first win of the Eastern Conference semifinals on May 10, 2026, while Detroit aims to continue its majestic campaign and stun the Cavaliers on the road.
