BACOLOD CITY – The Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division recognized the bravery and selfless service of Corporal Renold Gardose, who was killed in a series of clashes with the New People’s Army in Barangay Sto. Niño, Tanjay City, Negros Oriental on Feb. 15.
In his message, Major General Michael Samson, 3ID commander, said the slain soldier displayed extraordinary courage and dedication to duty in the face of danger.
“We will ensure that the sacrifice of our soldier will never be in vain. His sacrifice is a testament to the unwavering commitment of our troops to protect the Negrenses from the threats of the remaining NPA rebels,” Samson said.
Gardose, a native of Tapaz, Capiz, was assigned to the 11th Infantry Battalion. He was among the soldiers who clashed with the remnants of the dismantled South East Front, Komiteng Rehiyon – Negros last Sunday.
Recovered from the encounter sites were hand grenades, long and short magazines for M16 rifles, a magazine for .45 caliber, assorted ammunition, personal belongings, and other subversive documents left behind by the fleeing rebels.
Samson expressed his deepest condolences to the family of Gardose and assured that his heroism will forever be remembered.
“His courage and heroism will fuel the Division’s and our soldiers’ resolve in putting the NPA to its final end,” Samson said.
He added that Gardose’s legacy is a reminder that freedom and security come at a price, and it is their solemn duty to see that his ultimate sacrifice paves the way for a safer, more peaceful, and NPA-free environment for all Negrenses.
“We extend our sharpest salute in tribute to his gallantry and loyal service to the nation,” he said.
He also assured the family of necessary assistance and support during this difficult time.
The 3ID remains steadfast in its mandate to dismantle the remnants of the NPA and to sustain peace, security, and development efforts across Negros Oriental.
Meanwhile, Samson also assured assistance to the wounded soldier – a Private First Class – that he will receive the best possible care during his recovery.
“We will honor their sacrifices not only with words but also with concrete actions,” Samson said.
Samson urged the people of Negros Island to sustain their support for peace initiatives, stressing that unity among the Army, local government units, and communities is vital to achieving total victory in the fight against insurgency.
Brigadier General Jason Jumawan, commander of 302nd Infantry Brigade, reassured the public that heightened security operations continue in the area to safeguard civilians and prevent the resurgence of hostile elements.
“Even fragmented armed groups remain capable of violence. That is precisely why we do not allow them space to regroup. Zero threat is not achieved by waiting—it is achieved through sustained pressure,” Jumawan said in a statement.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
He added that continued security patrols deny the rebels mobility and mass forces, deny them influence, and deny them the ability to intimidate communities as they once claimed.
“They are reacting to sustained pressure,” he said.
Classes resume
Mayor Jose “Pepe” Orlino announced on Tuesday night the resumption of classes in the hinterland barangays of Tanjay City, after a series of monitoring and assessments conducted in coordination with local authorities.
Classes in Barangays Pal-ew, Bahian, and Sta. Cruz Nuevo resumed on Wednesday, Feb. 18.
However, classes in Barangay Sto. Niño will remain suspended to ensure there are no remaining threats in the area following the recent encounters.
Local authorities assured all residents that the situation is under control and that the highest security precautions are being implemented to safeguard the welfare of the community, especially in Barangay Sto. Niño.
All school heads and teachers are advised to remain vigilant and to continue coordinating with local authorities for updates.
Orlino enjoined everyone to continue praying for everyone’s safety.
Orlino also visited the affected residents on Monday, assuring them of the government’s support.
“What they’ve been through isn’t easy,” he said.
The city government also initiated intervention to relieve their trauma through Mental Health and Psychosocial Support.
He thanked those who gave their heartfelt service.
