2023 SEA Games: Agatha Wong clinches another gold medal in wushu

Agatha Wong continued her dominant display in the Southeast Asian Games after nabbing another gold medal in the wushu event last May 12, 2023, held at the Chroy Changvar Convention Center in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The Filipina superstar pulled off a stellar performance in the women’s taijiquan-taijijian combined category and bagged her fifth SEA Games gold medal since the 2017 edition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The 24-year-old sensation earned a total of 19.263 points and bested Sydney Chin of Malaysia and Basma Lachkar of Brunei during the gold medal stage.

It was a tough outing for the Filipina after trailing behind Chin and Lachkar in the taijiquan when she only scored 9.580 points.

However, Wong redeemed herself in the taijijian and put up a performance to remember after tallying 9.683 points.

Her impressive outing in the taijijian event was enough to make up for her third-place outing in the taijiquan and completed a terrific come-from-behind gold medal win.

Despite another successful finish in the biennial sporting event, Wong revealed her struggles trying to juggle her time between her studies and training for the national team.

“It was hard. Nagte-training ako twice a day, and then I still have to study at night. Kahit weekends I don’t really get to rest kasi yung training namin is Monday to Saturday,” Wong said.

Meanwhile, in the men’s wushu event, Sandrex Gainsan did enough to secure a bronze medal in the jianshu-qiangshu category.
