ILONGGA spikers placed second in the 2019 Beach Volleyball Republic on Tour Lingayen Open held at the Capitol Beachfront in Pangasinan.
The duo of former Central Philippine University (CPU) Golden Lions Roma Joy Doromal and Kly Orillaneda settled for the silver finish in the womens division after bowing to champions Bea Tan and Dij Rodriguez of Negros Occidental, 21-12, 21-15, in a scintillating finals clash May 8.
Doromal and Orillaneda represented National University-Boysen 1, while Tan and Rodriguez led Perlas squad.
Both teams were undefeated in five matches but Tan and Rodriguez were unstoppable in copping their third title in four legs this year.
Another Ilongga volleybelle, Jackie Estoquia, and DM Demontaño of Sta. Lucia bagged third place at the expense of Air Force 1 stalwarts May Ann Pantino and Jozza Cabalsa, 21-14, 21-17.
Meanwhile, Mike Abria and Jade Becaldo took the men’s title after beating NU Boysen’s James Buytrago and Pol Salvador, 21-19, 21-18.
Another WV player bound for Manila
After a sterling performance in the recently-concluded Palarong Pambansa in Davao City last week, the libero of the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Blue Barons secondary girls volleyball team Melody Pons is set to transfer to Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws.
The 16-year-old native of Talisay City, Negros Occidental is expected to follow the footsteps of her elder sister, Bernadeth Pons, in the collegiate scene.
Once I finish my high school at the Rafael Lacson Memorial National High School, I will move to Manila and I know my career will grow and develop. I am joining FEUs practices during summer the last two years, she added.
The younger Pons played superb in the Palarong Pambansa where she fuelled the regions secondary girls volleyball to capture the silver medal.
