Kevin Pison-Piamonte remains unstoppable. From the emotional magnitude of his FAMAS-winning Solo to the haunting religiosity of Candé, Piamonte returns to the silver screen with his latest offering, With Love, Bridgit. It is not merely another outstanding entry in his already distinguished oeuvre, but arguably his finest film to date, one that reveals a filmmaker working at the height of his artistic gravitas.

Written by Kevin Pison-Piamonte and Kenneth Dela Cruz, and produced by ERK Productions under the helm of Robert Rodriguez and Jose Ruel Garcia, With Love, Bridgit refuses the comforts of traditional comedy. Instead, it offers a carnivalesque portrait of Barangay Inday, where humor and despair become inseparable, where gossip functions as social currency, and where everyday life unfolds with absurd theatricality. At the center of this seemingly chaotic world is an unlikely spectator: Bridgit, the “barangay whore,” a stray dog who becomes the film’s flâneur. Wandering through streets, homes, wakes, drinking sessions, and public spectacles, Bridgit silently observes a community perpetually performing itself.

The flâneur, as theorized by French writer and critic Charles Baudelaire and later expanded by Walter Benjamin, is the detached urban wanderer who strolls through the modern city. Traditionally male, he “reads” the city by walking through it, transforming observation into critique. The flâneur is both participant and outsider, immersed within the crowd yet maintaining enough distance to perceive its contradictions. In Bridgit, Piamonte radically Filipinizes, in a distinctly Ilonggo fashion, this figure. The bustling boulevards of Baudelarian Paris give way to the dusty pathways of Barangay Inday, while the bourgeois French gentleman is replaced by a stray female dog whose flair and mannerisms evoke those of a babaeng bakla, and whose mobility exceeds that of any human character.

Bridgit possesses the unique privilege of unrestricted movement. She enters spaces where no single human character can remain continuously present. She wanders from one household to another, from feasts to funerals, from intimate conversations to public conflicts, stitching together the fragmented social geography of the barangay. From her constant chismis updates on the hypercomical breakdowns of Barangay Captain Shebang, to her observations of the chaotic lives of the sisters Marimar, Rosalinda, and Maria Mercedes, and her perpetual romantic longing for Port, Bridgit accumulates the rhythms, contradictions, and excesses of everyday life. Through these encounters, she becomes the repository of the barangay’s collective memory, moving seamlessly between private intimacies and public spectacles. This canine flânerie transforms the politics of spectatorship, displacing the privileged gaze of the detached observer with that of a marginal, liminal, and deeply embodied witness whose perspective reveals the absurdities, desires, and vulnerabilities that structure community life.

This rowdy ensemble succeeds largely because of Kristoffer Rhys Grabato’s showstopping performance as Barangay Captain Shebang, whose outsized comic energy never descends into caricature. Every exaggerated gesture carries a current of range, rage, and rupture, making him simultaneously hilarious and heartbreakingly human. Equally memorable are Laragene Servando-Retazo and Jastine Felmae Lemos as the perpetually feuding sisters Rosalinda and Marimar, whose impeccable comic timing recalls the finest traditions of Filipino television melodrama. Completing the trio is Elaisha Pomida as the youngest sister, Maria Mercedes, whose delightfully earnest performance lends yet another layer of tragic humor to the family’s perpetual dysfunction. Named after the iconic telenovela heroines immortalized by Mexican superstar Thalía, the sisters become affectionate parodies of hyperbolic excess, transforming familiar soap-opera conventions into some of the film’s funniest moments. Alexandra Jezrel Valle and Sean Ethan Sotto likewise charm as teenage pseudo-sweethearts Sher and Port, imbuing what could have been a one-dimensional puppy-love subplot with remarkable sincerity and emotional ease. Their natural chemistry provides the film with moments of genuine tenderness, allowing adolescent romance emerge as a quiet counterpoint to the absurdity and disillusionment surrounding the adults.

The result is a distinctly Filipino version of the carnivalesque. With Love, Bridgit embraces vulgarity, hysteria, and unmistakable Ilonggo humor not as mere comic relief but as modes of social revelation. Piamonte’s humor is hypercomic precisely because it never allows suffering to remain solemn. Every emotional climax is interrupted by yet another spectacle, denying the audience the comfort of uninterrupted tragedy. The citizens of Barangay Inday eat, drink, love, lust, dance zumba, and decay before the collective gaze of the community, transforming the barangay into a theatrical stage where private pain inevitably becomes public entertainment. The Ilonggo-ness of its humor adds another comedic layer beyond mainstream slapstick and caricature. The texture of street slurs and the crunch of beloved curse words render this carnival distinctly local. One standout technique is the use of the “Happy Thoughts” production number, reminiscent of the sing-and-dance extravaganzas of Pinoy films in the 1990s, yet unmistakably Ilonggo in its hala-bira pastiche.

Perhaps it is Piamonte’s decades-long history as Iloilo’s premier theater director that grants him such mastery over theatricality. Rather than merely adapting stage conventions to the screen, he orchestrates the film with a playwright’s instinct for ensemble movement, comic timing, and choreographed excess, allowing comedy and catastrophe to unfold in the same breath. From Shebang’s electrifying homage to Nora Aunor, Ricky Lee, and the late, great Ishmael Bernal, to the daily catfights and nilaga showdowns between sisters Rosalinda, and Marimar, With Love, Bridgit repeatedly poses a compelling question: Does life imitate the telenovela tradition, or does the telenovela merely imitate life? Piamonte wisely refuses to resolve the distinction. In Barangay Inday, melodrama is not borrowed from television; it is the very texture of everyday existence. It is neither paradise nor dystopia. It is messy, loud, affectionate, violent, hilarious, exhausting, and profoundly alive. The barangay emerges as a social organism incessantly producing stories, celebrations, gossip, and grief. Through Bridgit’s ceaseless wandering, these seemingly fragmented episodes coalesce into a coherent emotional geography where comedy and catastrophe become inseparable expressions of communal life.

The film’s visual language mirrors the idea of Bridgit as a flâneur, a wandering consciousness whose gaze shapes the audience’s experience of the barangay. EJ Salcedo, Gian Genoveza, and Alfred Perez’s cinematography refuses polished nostalgia, opting instead for an intimate visual register that allows Barangay Inday to breathe as a living organism. Frequently adopting a low, roaming perspective suggestive of a dog’s point of view, the camera lingers on sari-sari stores, alleyways, drinking tables, basketball courts, and cluttered living rooms with documentary-like attentiveness, transforming these familiar spaces into sites of social inquiry. Rather than imposing visual grandeur, the cinematography trusts the density of everyday life, allowing Bridgit’s restless movements to dictate the rhythm of discovery.

Perhaps the film’s greatest achievement lies in demonstrating that flânerie need not belong exclusively to modern metropolitan spaces. Piamonte reveals that observation itself is a political practice. The barangay, no less than the modern city, is a landscape of performances, desires, and power relations. Its streets are equally worthy of philosophical wandering. Through Bridgit, the Ilonggo barangay becomes theoretically legible without sacrificing its vernacular specificity.

With Love, Bridgit ultimately asks what it means to witness a community. Rather than offering moral judgments or neat resolutions, the film trusts the accumulated weight of observation. Bridgit does not intervene in the tragedies she encounters. She simply continues walking, watching, mourning, and remembering. Like the original flâneur centuries before her, she understands that the truth of a place resides not in extraordinary events but in the endless procession of ordinary lives crossing one another.

Yet the film’s most devastating insight arrives beneath its exuberant laughter. The greatest comedies have always delivered the sharpest wounds, and Piamonte understands that humor is often the most eloquent language of grief. As capitalism and industrialization steadily erode the social fabric of the barangay, its carnivalesque excess begins to resemble an act of collective mourning. What first appears as a carnival gradually reveals itself as a funeral for memory, a requiem for a way of life whose warmth, intimacy, and communal rhythms are slowly being displaced by the looming shadows of modernity. The laughter that reverberates through Barangay Inday is therefore never merely laughter, it is the sound of a community refusing to forget the joy it once held, even as that joy slips irretrievably into memory.
