The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) urged barangays in the metro to conduct zumba as means to promote health awareness.
On Tuesday, June 11, the SP unanimously passed a resolution urging barangays in the city of Iloilo to conduct Zumba fitness activities.
The proponent of the resolution, newly elected councilor Johnny Young said that there is a need to focus more on improving health and boosting the immune system through regular exercise amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Regular exercise might significantly reduce the risk of acute respiratory distress syndrome which is one of the main causes of death in Covid-19 patients,” he said.
He cited the different benefits of zumba like weight loss and body toning. The regular fitness activity coupled with a healthy diet can also boost heart health, improve coordination, and a way to relieve stress, he furthered.
Young added that he chose to promote zumba as a fitness activity which includes cardio and dance exercises involving Latin American music since it can be participated by the different members of the community regardless of age.
“It is easy to conduct and it is an activity that anyone can enjoy. It is open to all age levels,” he said. (DG)
